Lake Tahoe is the largest Alpine Lake in North America, straddles two states and has 300 days of sunshine a year. We had to go explore this outdoor wonderland, so from Pacifica we drove to Lake Tahoe, it’s amazing to see the change in scenery from bustling San Francisco with cool temperatures to small towns along US-50 where temperatures were in the mid to high 90’s.
The drive as you get nearer to Lake Tahoe is beautiful!
We stayed at Campground By The Lake in South Lake Tahoe. It’s a great location, across the street from the lake and close to lots of activities but the water level in the lake was very low so the beach was very sad and unappealing. We didn’t even attempt to go in the water!
The view of the Lake was beautiful!
We drove around the lake and toured some historic homes, stopped at several view points and tried our luck at the casinos.
The highlight of our trip was taking the gondola up to Heavenly. It was a 2.4 mile ride up.
At 9,123 (elevation) you can hop off the gondola to the observation deck and get an incredible view of the Lake Tahoe basin.
At the top of the gondola ride you can jump on a ski lift to reach another view point. We hiked up from there to 10,040 ft.
Leaving Lake Tahoe we drove along the northeastern shore. There were several beautiful beaches with crystal clear water. I think if we were to come back to the area we would definitely want to explore this side of the lake more!
